What is SmartCape?
SmartCape is an Internet service designed to help citizens of Cape Town access the Internet, free of charge.
About SmartCape
The SmartCape service can be found at various points across the city –
in our libraries, where you will find connected computers in the SmartCape Foyer at 44 Wale Street and at
WiFi hotspots around the city.
We started our SmartCape service in our libraries in 2005. We now have more than 300 000 registered users in 97 public libraries, using our connected computers to email, type CVs and assignments, apply for jobs, do research and have fun online.
To
access our SmartCape service in one of our public libraries, you need to be a registered library user. Find out more about how to
register with the SmartCape service through your library, where you will be allocated 45 minutes free internet daily. If accessing via Wi-Fi, as a registered user you will receive 500MB of free data monthly.
If you are accessing the SmartCape service using your own device as a non-registered user, you can apply for a token through one of our WiFi hotpots. You can look forward to 50MB free data when you log in.

An Opportunity City: SmartCape has become a model for municipalities throughout South Africa. The project team has been approached by other municipalities for guidance.
